Check Southern Correctional Institution Releases

To find someone released from Southern Correctional Institution, use North Carolina state correction records, not a Montgomery County jail roster. Southern is an NCDAC state prison for sentenced adult men. Its release, discharge, transfer, and supervision events belong to the statewide offender record. A person leaving Southern may return to the community, begin parole or post-release supervision, finish a sentence, or move to another prison. Reliable Southern Correctional Institution release confirmation compares the incarceration status, sentence history, actual release entry, and any active community supervision shown by the state.

Southern Institution Release Paths

Southern Correctional Institution is a North Carolina Department of Adult Correction prison, not the Montgomery County jail. A community release from Southern may be recorded as sentence expiration, parole, or release into post-release supervision. Parole is discretionary release used mainly for eligible older-law sentences. Post-release supervision, or PRS, is the supervised period that follows many felony terms under current North Carolina sentencing law. A person may therefore be out of prison while remaining active in Community Supervision.

A transfer is different. Movement from Southern to another NCDAC prison changes the current location but does not end state custody. The offender history should show movement or a new location without an Actual Release Date that signifies the end of that incarceration period. Read the person-level record instead of relying on a facility name disappearing from a screen.

Confirm Southern Institution Release

Use NCDAC Offender Public Information, commonly called OPI. Enter the offender number first when known. That identifier is more reliable than a name and follows a person across commitments. Otherwise, search by last and first name, then use available demographic filters only to separate same-name records. Open the match and compare the identity and sentence data before drawing a conclusion.

  1. Read the profile’s active or inactive designation and current location if the person remains incarcerated.
  2. Open the incarceration and sentence blocks tied to the Southern commitment.
  3. Look for the exact Actual Release Date and service status for that incarceration period.
  4. Read the separate probation, parole, or post-release status and the most recent supervision period.
  5. If an entry remains unclear, request the NCDAC record using the offender number and commitment dates.

“Inactive” alone is not a full release explanation. It can mark the end of a record category for more than one reason. An Actual Release Date can coexist with active PRS, parole, or probation. Reconcile both header statuses with the history. A county-only pretrial detainee who never entered state custody may not appear in OPI at all.

Important: A Southern transfer changes prisons. A Southern release ends the stated incarceration period, but supervision may continue in the community.

Southern Release Search Fields

NCDAC’s separate Inmate Release Search supplies a second state route. It filters by release county, year, and month. Montgomery appears as county option 62. Observed results contained offender number, last, first and middle name, release date, primary offense and qualifier, and type of release. The year choices roll, so select from the current live options.

The monthly release tool can help locate a Southern Correctional Institution release associated with Montgomery County, but it does not replace the detailed OPI profile. A county filter is not proof that every result was physically discharged through Southern. Use the offender number to open the person’s full record, identify the incarceration block, and verify the facility and event. Nor is this state tool a Montgomery County Detention Center release list.

Projected Release Date
A calculated future date that can change.
Actual Release Date
The recorded end date for the stated incarceration period.
Service status
The record label describing whether the correctional period is active, expired, or otherwise closed.
Post-release supervision
State supervision after physical prison release for covered sentences.

Southern Institution Release Records

A fuller historical record should be requested from NCDAC, not the Montgomery County Sheriff. Use the NCDAC public records route and give the offender number, full name, commitment period, and the type of release or sentence record sought. Basic conviction, sentence length, time served, admission, and release dates are generally public according to NCDAC guidance, while many other prison records remain confidential.

Ask for existing records rather than an explanation that staff would have to create. A useful scope identifies the incarceration at Southern Correctional Institution and requests public admission, transfer, sentence, release, and supervision entries for that period. If a court judgment or correction is at issue, obtain the official order from the clerk in the county where the case was filed. One office should not be asked to certify another agency’s event.

The facility phone confirms identity and operational contact, but the statewide OPI and NCDAC records office are the sound historical release paths. The main Montgomery County released inmate search compares those state sources with county, court, SAVAN, and federal channels.

Southern Institution Custody Facts

NCDAC describes Southern Correctional Institution as a male close-custody prison with a published capacity of 664. Close custody is a state security classification. It does not describe a person’s release eligibility or date. Southern holds state prisoners, so local bond-release language and a county-jail live roster do not fit this facility.

The official Southern facility page supplies its current identity, type, location, phone, capacity, and history.

Southern Correctional Institution release record facility source

The facility page confirms Southern as the relevant NCDAC institution. A person’s release must still be established from OPI, the Inmate Release Search, or an NCDAC response rather than from the general facility description.

Southern Release Name History

Southern opened in 1983. The former minimum-security Montgomery Correctional Center merged into Southern in 1996, and the processing-center role ended that year. After a period serving a different population, Southern returned to a male close-custody mission in spring 2019. Older documents may therefore contain a former facility name or reflect a past mission.

This history helps reconcile records, but it cannot confirm any person’s release. Search by offender number and the person’s commitment dates. Match the sentence history rather than assuming that “Montgomery Correctional Center” in an older record is a separate current release source. NCDAC can clarify a historical facility label when the public profile is not enough.

Note: Facility history explains old names and missions, while only a person-level NCDAC record establishes release, transfer, or active custody.

Two Glen Road Release Systems

Southern at 272 Glen Road sits near Montgomery County Detention Center at 206 Glen Road. This is a local geography trap. Southern belongs to NCDAC, while the detention center belongs to the Sheriff. A person can leave the county jail for Southern without returning to the community. The county booking record should reflect the transfer, and OPI becomes the next source once state admission is processed.

The reverse path also needs care. A person released from Southern may enter Community Supervision and does not pass through the county jail merely because both facilities are in Troy. If another hold exists, NCDAC may transfer the person rather than produce a community release. Always identify the releasing agency, the destination, and any later supervision period.

Southern Projected Release Changes

OPI distinguishes a Projected Release Date from an Actual Release Date. A projected date is a calculation. It can change because earned time is awarded or forfeited, court-awarded time or judgments are corrected, consecutive or concurrent sentence links change, another sentence or detainer appears, or supervision is revoked. The actual date records the end of the stated incarceration period.

North Carolina’s truth-in-sentencing shorthand is not a universal “release at 85 percent” rule. A structured-sentencing felony prisoner must serve the minimum term. The maximum term, earned time, and the nine-, 12-, or specified 60-month PRS structure also matter. The state Commission describes the broad framework as 100 percent of the minimum and at least 85 percent of the maximum, but individual statutes and sentence facts control. Use the public date as a status field, not a personal calculator or promise.

G.S. 15A-1340.13(d) requires service of the minimum felony term. G.S. 148-13 authorizes NCDAC earned-time rules. Under G.S. 15A-1368.2, the ordinary PRS release calculation subtracts 12 months from the maximum for Class B1 through E felonies or nine months for Class F through I felonies, less earned time. A specified registration category uses a different 60-month structure. These rules explain why the maximum, minimum, credits, and PRS period must be read together.

Projected dates can also change after the public profile is first posted. Earned time may be lost, a court can correct a judgment or time award, and a later sentence or detainer can alter the expected exit. Call NCDAC for clarification when the history conflicts with the header. Do not substitute an old screen capture for the current person record.
